Bangladesh poultry industry declines

Almost 18.000 poultry farms in Bangladesh have shut down between July 2007 and January 31 2008, according to newspaper reports. The decline of the country´s poultry industry is attributed to the sharp price increase of poultry feed, bird flu panic and the lack of insu-rance coverage.

COLDSTOREDESIGN.COM-EXPERTS PRESENT VISION

ON MODERN REFRIGERATED WAREHOUSING IN INDIA

Under the title “Modern refrigerated warehousing; the best of the best from all over”, ColdStoreDesign-experts Koenraad Van Simaey and Theo van Sambeeck (picture)discussed (picture) the consequences of the absence of a proper cold chain during the Acrex exposition in Ban-galore (India). Based on 10 global trends in con-sumption and food retail, the main logistic obstacles in the Indian cold supply chain, and their expectations for the chilled and frozen food market in India, they presented their vision on how logistic entrepreneurs can meet international standards. PALLET RACKING SYSTEMS STRONGLY INFLUENCE PROFIT

Pallet racking systems come in many different shapes and sizes and different systems are suitable for different types of warehouses. But what are the main characteristics and what should be kept in mind when choosing a racking system? The wrong choice means less revenue potential and higher operational costs during the lifetime of the warehouse. More

LOGISTICS SECTOR FACES CHALLENGING YEAR

The global logistics sector is facing a year of challenges, according to researchers of Datamonitor. The market analysts fear that the sector will be hit by the international credit crisis. In combination with a decrease in consumer confidence, this will put more pressures on margins. Data-monitor predicts that the tough economic climate will not only hit smaller firms, but that also some large companies will not survive. Furthermore, the analysts expect an increase in cooperation initiatives and further con-solidation.

WHAT A MODERN WAREHOUSE MANAGEMENT SYSTEM

DOES AND DOESN´T DO

A modern and professional warehousing or 3PL company nowadays cannot operate without a reliable warehouse management system (WMS). A WMS obviously supports the intake, release and storage of goods and because it records all data on intake and release, it is an efficient tool for com-plying with the recent EU regulations regarding traceability in the cold chain. But a WMS is also very suitable for registering all operational proce-dures in the warehouse. However, there also are several things a WMS doesn’t do. Read full story

WHAT TO LOOK FOR WHEN CHOOSING A LOCATION

The first question when building a new cold store or distribution center is “where?”. Choosing the right location is crucial and a location study can be part of the Pre-Design Phase. According to experts, there are 5 para-meters to take into account: (1) geographical position, (2) customer ser-vice levels, (3) building(s), (4) invested capital, and (5) personnel. Geo-graphical position deals with the supply chain. Where is the product flow coming from and where is it going after release. The shortest line without extra handling is always the best. The number and volumes of deliveries to/from these clients (#2) determine who the biggest customers are, and therefore also influence location. The invested capital (#3) depends on the type of building that is required, which in turn has a direct impact on the number of staff (#5). Once the location has been determined, it comes down to finding an available site within that area. Read more

NEW TEMPERATURE MONITORING DEVICE

Strict temperature regulations in the food industry regularly result in new temperature monitoring devices. MadgeTech (USA) has now created a data logging device which it claims can detect temperature changes to half a degree Celsius for chilled or frozen products in storage or transit. The logger can be set at a reading rate of anything from every five seconds to every half hour.
